Aquanuity, Inc., the leader in strategy-led simulation-powered water infrastructure digital twin software, continues to innovate and quickly expand upon its best-in-class products and platform with the release of AquaTwin Water Generation V5 for ArcGIS Pro. The new version expands AquaTwin Water discrete operational (simple and rule-based) controls capabilities for pumps and valves with continuous operational controls via Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) Controller.
Discrete operational controls describe how the water distribution network is operated over time. They specify the status of selected regulators (pumps and valves), such as turning a pump on or off or fully opening or closing a valve, as a function of time, tank water levels, and pressures at select points within the network. Continuous operations controls consist of continuous adjustments in valve closure setting or pump speed to maintain the desirable hydraulic conditions in the water distribution network.
A PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) Controller is a feedback control scheme that tries to maintain a fixed (set-point) value or range of values of controlled variables (e.g., flow, pressure, velocity, tank level) by automatically computing and applying a corrective action that dynamically adjusts the regulator (pump or valve) setting to minimize the deviation of the controlled variable from the desired values. Corrective actions consist of continuous adjustments of regulator settings (e.g., pump speed or valve openness). Examples of such capabilities may include the ability to continuously adjust: (1) valve openness or valve setting (for say a PRV) to maintain a target pressure at a specific location or a target flow or velocity in a specific pipe; (2) pump speed (for a variable speed pump) to maintain a desired pressure range (say between 80 to 100 psi) at a particular location or tank level range; and (3) pump operations to avoid undesirable excessive velocities and associated water quality problems.
“AquaTwin Water V5 marks another milestone in water infrastructure digital twin innovation,” said Paul Boulos, Chairman and CEO of Aquanuity. “This latest release adds powerful PID Controller capabilities for improved operation and performance of water distribution systems. Such capabilities are critical for effective pressure management, water loss (leakage) reduction, and energy efficiency. We continue to push the technology curve to make it better, faster, easier for water utilities to build, operate, manage, and sustain high-performing, highly efficient and resilient water infrastructure systems for success.”
